Homeless Helper finder
A nationwide finder, filterable by state and county — with honest source labels on every location.

Capabilities

Real data, honestly labeled.

26,135 locations

17,367 HRSA health centers, 3,451 HUD housing authorities, 1,302 housing-counseling agencies, and 4,015 community-mapped shelters/food/day-centers.

Nearest help

"Use my location" ranks by on-device haversine distance, with an explicit privacy note — precise location is requested only on tap.

Live availability

Approved providers publish short-lived beds / food / showers status with a quantity, a TTL, an expiry, a "last checked" time, and the source it came from.

Filters that fit

Shelter / food / healthcare / showers crossed with audience filters — women & gender-diverse, men, youth, families, older adults, low-barrier.

Save & print

Build a personal shortlist stored on-device — no login — then save, share, copy, or print it.

Works offline

An offline-first PWA plus a native Android app that keeps one-tap calls to 211 and 988 working with no connectivity.

Hand-verified listings

Curated, hand-verified local listings (40+ in the Colorado pilot) carry real-time open/closed status on top of the federal data.

🤝

Provider workspace

Approved providers can claim a listing, correct it, report a problem, or submit a new one — through a moderated pipeline.

One-tap official links

Direct links to 211, HUD, HRSA, and the VA, plus curated nationwide and state-benefit link hubs.

Privacy-by-design for a vulnerable population. No account is needed to find help, saved lists stay on-device, and domestic-violence, abuse, and sexual-assault locations are deliberately excluded from the public map — users are routed to the National DV Hotline instead. Every location shows whether it's official federal data, community-mapped, or provider-submitted — with source and "last checked" dates.

Under the hood

Real security, quietly.

  • A Next.js static export with a strict CSP; provider data generated offline from HRSA/HUD/OSM/Census sources.
  • The provider API is a dependency-free Python service on SQLite, with authentication delegated to the shared ASL Keycloak realm.
  • A read-before-decide guarantee: admin decisions return 409 unless that admin has opened the exact item — you can't approve content you never saw.
  • Complaints need three distinct reporters in 30 days to raise a review alert, and never auto-hide a listing.
