PlateScan Privacy Notice
This notice explains how the PlateScan app for Android, listed on Google Play as ASL Plate Scan, collects, uses and protects information, and supplements the Auto Secure Login Privacy Policy. Both apply; where this notice gives more detail or protection for PlateScan, it controls for PlateScan.
What it collects
- The photo you choose to send, with its size and dimensions. The app re-encodes it on your phone first, so no location, camera or other embedded metadata is sent.
- The country, state and vehicle answers you give for the photo.
- What the reader found: each plate it read, a crop of the part of the photo it read, and how confident it was.
- Your answers: whether each read is right, any correction you type, and any plate you say it missed.
- Your acceptance of the PlateScan Terms of Service and the version you accepted.
- A random token the app creates when it is installed. We store it only as a one-way hash, and use it so that only your phone can see your results and to limit how often one phone can send.
Why it is used
To read the plates in your photo and show you the result, and to train and improve the reader. Both are part of the service you accept under the PlateScan Terms of Service: you get a read, and every photo you send, its plate crops and your answers are kept and used to train and improve the reader.
Accepting the Terms of Service is the condition of using PlateScan, and nothing is sent or processed until you have accepted them. Your answers are the only labels we use, and the reader is trained on them in measured batches, never live. A single read never confirms a plate; each result is something to check.
Where it lives and where it goes
The photo travels over an encrypted connection through our own relay, which passes it on without keeping it, to our own reader on hardware we operate in Colorado. No outside company or AI service receives it. The working copy the reader uses is deleted as soon as the result is ready, and the result record your phone checks is deleted 24 hours later.
The kept copy (the photo, its plate crops, your answers and your acceptance of the Terms of Service) stays on that same hardware as training data. Your IP address is used only in memory to limit how many requests arrive, and is not kept with your submission.
Who else receives it
No one. We do not sell or share it, and the app has no sign-in and contains no advertising, analytics or tracking code. Google Play delivers the app and its updates under Google's own terms; it does not receive your photos or answers.
How long it is kept
The working copy is deleted when the result is ready and the result record after 24 hours. The kept copy is kept as training data until you delete it. Deleting it removes it from every future training batch; a reader version already trained on an earlier batch cannot un-learn a single photo.
Sensitive information
A license plate can be linked to a vehicle's registered owner by anyone with access to registration records. We do not have or seek that access and we do not look plates up. PlateScan has no face or person recognition and does not identify vehicle make or model. Send only photos of plates that are yours or that you have the right to share. Other plates in the same photo are read and kept with it, so crop them out before sending, or delete the submission.
Your choices
- If you do not accept the PlateScan Terms of Service, the app does not let you send a photo.
- Delete a submission from its result screen, or later from About using its submission id. Deleting removes the photo, its plate crops and your answers.
- Or email the submission id to contact@autosecurelogin.com. The id is all we need; we hold no name, account or contact details to ask you for.
- Uninstalling the app removes its token, so copy a submission's id first if you may want to delete it later.
