Is ChatGPT Recommending Your Competitor Instead of You?
Customers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI answers who to call. If a competitor keeps getting named, it is usually because their business is easier to find, understand and verify. Here is how to fix that.

Why an AI assistant names a competitor
AI assistants recommend what they can find and confirm. A competitor with clear service pages, consistent listings and plenty of real reviews gives the assistant more evidence than a business with a thin website and an old phone number in three directories.
When ChatGPT searches the web, OpenAI says it looks up current information and links its sources. Google says its AI features draw on the same pages and best practices as regular Search. So the work that helps you in AI answers overlaps heavily with good local SEO.
The signals that help a business get mentioned
- Clear website content: say what you do, who it is for, where you work and what happens next, in plain words. "Quality service you can trust" gives an AI nothing to summarize.
- One page per core service: an "emergency water heater repair" page beats a crowded "Services" page for that question.
- Reviews: a steady pattern of real reviews and professional replies on the platforms your customers use.
- Consistent listings: the same business name, address, phone, hours and website everywhere, from your Google Business Profile to industry directories.
- FAQs that match real questions: timing, preparation, service area, what is included and how booking works.
- Structured data: Google's local business markup helps systems read your hours, address and services. It supports visibility; it does not force a mention.
Check what AI assistants say about you today
AI answers vary from run to run, so one prompt proves little. Run the same set once a month in a fresh chat, ask as a customer in your city, and save the answers. Try more than one assistant if your customers do.
- "What are some good [type of business] near [city or neighborhood]?"
- "Who would you recommend for [specific service] in [city]?"
- "Compare a few local options for [service] near [city]."
- "What does [your business name] do?"
- "Is [your business name] a good option for [service]?"
Record whether you appear, which competitors appear, whether the description is accurate, which sources are cited and what is missing or out of date. Wrong answers often trace back to an old listing or page that is still online.
A 30-day plan
- Days 1-3, baseline: run the prompt set, search your name and main service, and list where you and your competitors appear.
- Days 4-7, fix the basics: correct your name, address, phone, hours, website and categories on Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, Facebook and the main directories in your trade.
- Days 8-14, service pages: one clear page per core service with the problem it solves, who it is for, where it is available and the next step.
- Days 15-21, reviews and FAQs: ask recent happy customers for honest reviews, reply to existing ones and add FAQs written from real customer questions.
- Days 22-26, technical checks: add local business structured data, make sure pages load fast on phones and that nothing important is blocked from crawlers.
- Days 27-30, re-test: run the same prompts and compare. Expect gradual change, not overnight.
Google's own tips to improve your local ranking line up closely with this plan.
Do not let AI crawlers get blocked by accident
Some websites block AI crawlers in robots.txt or behind security settings without the owner knowing. If assistants that fetch pages cannot read your site, they rely on whatever directories say instead. Check your robots.txt and firewall rules and decide deliberately which crawlers you allow; Bing's webmaster guidelines are a useful reference.
Be wary of guaranteed AI rankings
No one controls what ChatGPT or any assistant says. Be careful with agencies that promise "guaranteed ChatGPT placement" or instant mentions. Honest work improves the public evidence about your business: accurate listings, useful pages, real reviews and a site that loads well. That helps with customers and regular search too.
Never buy or fake reviews to influence AI answers; fake reviews break FTC rules and damage the trust you are trying to build.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?
Nobody can guarantee it, but you can make your business easier to recommend: clear service pages, consistent listings, real reviews, FAQs that match customer questions and a site crawlers can read.
Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor?
Usually because their public information is clearer, more consistent or better reviewed, so the assistant has more evidence about them than about you.
How do I check what AI says about my business?
Run the same customer-style prompts in a fresh chat every month, save the answers and track whether you appear, how you are described and which sources are cited.
Does structured data help with AI search?
It helps search systems read details like your address, hours and services. It supports visibility but does not force any assistant to mention you.
Should I pay for guaranteed AI rankings?
No. Nobody controls AI answers. Spend the effort on accurate listings, useful pages and real reviews instead.
