Chargen: give a player-created character ties to the existing cast

The new relationship path links a player’s character to suitable people in the bank, with a corresponding relationship on the other side.

Work covered: Oct 5, 2026

Arrive as someone with a history

A player-created character can feel disconnected if everyone else in the world already belongs to a network of relationships. The October 5 ties feature gives that character connections drawn from the existing bank. The relationship generation uses the character’s life and applicable role rules, giving the person a place in the world before the first new encounter.

A relationship has two sides

The output includes the matching relationship for the other character. Family, hometown connections and eligible shared-history ties therefore need to agree from both perspectives. Follow-up work corrected relationship direction rather than treating a one-sided label as sufficient. The goal is a connection that a game can use consistently when either person is the focus.

Roles constrain the available ties

An officer and an inmate do not receive the same set of institutional relationships. The feature applies the bank’s rules to the player’s role and history, while avoiding the use of appearance or ancestry as a shortcut to personality or relationship meaning. The resulting ties can support encounters, prior closeness and later correspondence in a consuming game.

Generation and gameplay are distinct milestones

Chargen implemented the library and service path with repeatable checks. Bars or Badge separately integrated those ties into residents, relationship records and letters. This article covers the generation milestone: a player character no longer needs to be a stranger to the cast, and each generated connection carries the counterpart needed for the game to represent it coherently.
