Chargen: more ways for a life to develop before and during play
New background scenarios and separate outside-life and officer events widen character histories without confusing a generated past with an event that just happened.
Work covered: Oct 2, 2026
Variety needs different situations, not different wording
The October catalog expansion added 160 background scenarios across law, substance use, housing and parenthood. The purpose was to broaden the situations that can shape a fictional life, not inflate the count with renamed participants or alternate sentences describing the same event. Generated lives retain a fixed event total while drawing from a wider eligible pool.
Keep the past separate from what happens next
Two additional collections serve experiences that occur during play. Outside-life events include visits, letters, support and the transition beyond the institution. Officer events include shifts, backup, complaints and career developments. Those collections are used for lived events rather than being silently drawn into every character’s initial background.
Preserve reproducibility across catalog changes
The work carried the catalog version through generation and related character views. Earlier catalog lives remain valid and can be reproduced under their recorded version. This matters when a game already has an established cast: expanding the available scenarios should not make an old character impossible to inspect consistently.
What the checks establish
A recorded sample audit found more variation in shared events after the expansion, but it did not claim unlimited uniqueness for every possible population. Content-rating and eligibility rules also remain part of generation. The milestone is a broader, versioned set of fictional experiences and a clearer distinction between the life a character arrives with and the experiences the game adds afterward.
