Product Vision: use the better counter and the better writer together

A two-stage approach improved descriptions without adopting a larger reader’s weaker object counts.

Work covered: Oct 3, 2026 – Oct 4, 2026

Bigger did not mean better at every task

An October comparison found a useful split: a stronger visual reader wrote more accurate descriptions, but counted objects less reliably. It sometimes treated parts of a product or pictures printed on it as separate objects. Replacing the existing reader everywhere would therefore have improved one part of the workflow while weakening another.

Keep the inventory stable

The adopted approach kept the established counting stage and asked the stronger writer to describe that stage’s agreed objects. The writer did not get to redefine the inventory while producing prose. This made the two responsibilities explicit: first determine what objects are present, then describe those objects as accurately as possible.

Compare on a fresh sample

The combination was declared before a new set of 43 photographs was evaluated. In the recorded blind sentence review, true sentences increased from 92.8% to 97.2%, and descriptions without a false sentence increased from 66.7% to 80.7%. More photographs received a description, but processing also took longer. These are results for that specific evaluation, not a general accuracy guarantee or an independent benchmark.

The remaining errors matter

The review still found mistakes involving shape and position, such as describing a smooth rim as scalloped. The milestone is a measured improvement and an adopted research path, not permission to publish every draft without review. It also shows why counting quality and writing quality deserve separate tests: a fluent description cannot repair an inventory that started with the wrong objects.
