Product Vision: return a supported product family instead of guessing a listing

The photo may support a broader answer
A catalog can contain multiple listings that share a photograph or belong to a closely related product group. In that situation, selecting one exact listing can imply more certainty than the image provides. Product Vision’s October 8 milestone added an explicit family-level answer rather than treating every identification as all-or-nothing at the listing level.
Choose when to answer
The family decision was evaluated with a declared calibration process and separate test data. A supported answer is released only when the measured evidence meets the adopted rule; other cases remain unanswered at that level. In the recorded test half, 510 of 1,404 eligible photographs received a family answer, and 12 of those answers were wrong. That limited coverage and remaining error are part of the result.
Make the evaluated behavior reach the product
A follow-up checked the running identifier against the measured answers on 600 held-out photographs. It reproduced the identification answer throughout that check, with two family-decision differences involving ties within the same family. This connected the research decision to the implemented path rather than leaving it as a promising report alone.
Do not promote the next experiment prematurely
A separate exact-listing experiment still failed its acceptance criterion and was not treated as a successful replacement. The meaningful advance is an honest intermediate answer: identify a supported family when possible, preserve uncertainty when necessary, and leave the exact listing for stronger evidence. The research term “certified” refers to its own statistical acceptance procedure, not an external product certification.
